Secnidazole
Active Ingredient: Secnidazole

It is used to treat infections of the stomach, intestine, urinary tract and genital area.

General information
Secnidazole is a synthetic derivative of the group of nitroimidazoles. Its antiparasitic activity affects Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas vaginalis and Gardnerella vaginalis. It is indicated for the treatment of intraintestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis (liver), intestinal diseases caused by Giardia lamblia (giardiasis or lambliasis), trichomoniasis (vaginitis and urethritis) and nonspecific vaginosis.
Directions
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food. Single dose of 2000 mg is recommended for adults to treat Intestinal amebiasis and giardiasis. 500 mg 3 times daily for 5-7 days is recommended for adults to treat asymptomatic amoebiasis. Single dose 2000 mg is recommended for adults to treat Urethral or vaginal trichomoniasis.
Precautions
This medicine contains lactose. If you have an intolerance to sugars, contact your doctor before taking it. Caution should be exercised in patients with history of blood disorder. It is advised to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication as it may cause such mental disturbances as mental confusion, anxiety, agitation and impairment of thought.
Contraindications
You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to the active ingredient, if you have a severe liver disorder, if you have a blood dyscrasia or if you have an active organic disease of the nervous system.
Possible side effect
The most common side effects are Nausea, Fever and chills, Stomach pain, Indigestion, Unusual tiredness and Weakness. Call your doctor at once if you have Vertigo or Allergic skin reaction.
Drug interactions
Be extra carefully and let your doctor know if you take Warfarin, Cimetidine or Disulfiram.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. Overdose symptoms are nausea, severe stomach pain, confusion, impairment of thinking etc.
Storage
Store Secnidazole at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
